Veganism-Is it for You?
In recent years, the world has seen people opting for plant based lifestyles in droves. The number of Americans who identify as vegan has increased by 500 percent since 2014.
While the idea of saving animals and feeling very “namaste” with nature can sound appealing, the latest movement may not be for everyone. Here are some questions to ask yourself before taking the plunge.
1.Will you put in the effort?
Cutting out animal products is a huge change. If you do not plan on carefully monitoring your dietary choices, you could be at risk for certain nutritional deficiencies, namely iron and B12. Make sure you’re getting plant sources of these nutrients, like legumes and fortified grains. It may be a wise decision to follow up with a healthcare practitioner who can order blood tests of your nutrient levels
2. What are your goals?
There is huge difference between eating vegan and being vegan. Are you going vegan on an ethical basis or to shed pounds? If weight loss is your goal, you should be extra careful with your level of restriction. Often times, vegans will have to eat a lot more calories to fuel their bodies, and the 1200 a day you may be used to just won’t cut it. This could result in very rapid weight loss, which can be very dangerous.
3. Will you have support?
The number one key to sticking to a plant based diet long term is whether or not your friends and family will be supportive. If the people around you do not agree with your decision and do not put in an effort to understand it, you may find yourself veering off track. Friends that are interested in trying your vegan food will make your transition a lot easier than those who are always trying to entice you with animal products.
Going vegan can be a life changing decision. You may have increased energy and motivation, and there’s some evidence that plant based diets can have a positive effect on some health issues. However, if not done carefully and consciously it could lead to a lot more harm than good. Before making such a huge change, make sure you are in ready and have access to a healthcare professional should you need medical guidance.
